She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 33
Lin Ran, furious and struggling to breathe evenly, snapped, “Fine, I’ll go by myself!”
She stormed outside, while Zhang Tao cautiously observed Ji Lingbai’s expression. Ji Lingbai seemed calm and didn’t intend to speak, suggesting he wasn’t too angry.
Ji Lingbai indeed wasn’t planning to speak. He pulled out a small, icy, gleaming knife from a special pouch at his elbow. With a flick of his wrist, the knife sliced off a lock of Lin Ran’s hair and embedded itself in the door in front of her, just missing her ear.
Lin Ran’s entire body stiffened.
The cut hair floated in the air, not yet fallen.
She turned around in disbelief, “What do you mean by this?”
Ji Lingbai remained calm, “It means warning you not to go looking for her.”
Lin Ran’s hands trembled, her voice becoming sharp and her face pale as she shouted, “Did you see what happened just now? Or do you know her? I am the Deputy Master of the First Fortress! Who does she think she is?”
Ji Lingbai retrieved his knife, smiling faintly, “If you get in my way again, I can ensure you’re no longer the Deputy Master.”
Lin Ran took a step back, supporting herself on the door to avoid completely losing composure.
Ji Lingbai had always found her annoying, but he had never spoken so harshly to her before.
This time, she hadn’t even done anything to him. It had nothing to do with him, so why was he suddenly so intolerable?
“Lin Ran, I heard you’re planning to recruit twenty people for your own private team,” Ji Lingbai’s voice was calm, but with each word, Lin Ran’s face grew paler.
“I don’t think you can manage yourself, so there’s no need to form a private team. Besides, as the Deputy Master, you don’t have the authority to do so.”
“I…” Lin Ran tried to argue.
Ji Lingbai interrupted impatiently, “Zhang Tao, come with me. There’s something I need to tell you.”
Zhang Tao quickly left, closing the door behind him.
“Brother Ji, is this okay?” Zhang Tao gestured toward the inside. “That woman will probably regret this.”
“She needs to regret it, so she won’t bother me again,” Ji Lingbai was thoroughly annoyed with her.
“This is the map.” Ji Lingbai tossed the item to Zhang Tao. “Get it back quickly and have everyone prepare to move.”
“Got it.” Zhang Tao accepted it with a smile, “When should everyone come over?”
“You know the Eighteenth Fortress is recruiting, right?”
“I heard.”
“On that day,” Ji Lingbai said, then suddenly thought of San Wu at home petting the black panther. Abruptly changing the topic, he asked, “Why did you give her so little stuff earlier? Is there more? Bring it all out.”
Zhang Tao was speechless.
In the end, Lin Ran watched blankly as Ji Lingbai came back in and took the remaining three packs of beef jerky.
Zhang Tao put away the map, sighed when he saw Lin Ran’s state, and said, “Sister Lin, let’s pack up and stay here for the night. We’ll head back tomorrow.”
Lin Ran sat on the stool, her hands and feet cold, unable to process what he was saying.
Zhang Tao shrugged, thinking it was time she faced reality.
The saying that a woman pursuing a man was like a layer of gauze was meaningless when it came to their Brother Ji.
San Wu was still thinking about the midnight snack when Xiao Bai returned, carrying three packs of beef jerky.
He dropped the jerky on her lap.
“Where did you get this?” San Wu asked, already tempted by the jerky. “You didn’t steal it, did you?”
Ji Lingbai bristled at the accusation. Him, steal?
Seeing his reaction, San Wu knew it wasn’t stolen.
Ji Lingbai had his secrets, and so did she.
“As long as it’s not stolen or robbed, it’s fine.”
Even though many people in the apocalypse had no principles, Ah Si had told her that the day one lost their bottom line as a person, living was no different from being a zombie.
She wasn’t worried about food and didn’t want anyone around her to steal or rob others’ food, which could be life-saving.
Ji Lingbai nodded, thinking his subordinates had given it to him willingly, so it wasn’t considered robbery.
Since the beef jerky was brought back by her pet cat, San Wu couldn’t share it with the lower-level zombies. During the night snack, she roasted an extra fish for Ji Lingbai.
The Lead Zombie, watching from the side, felt a surge of jealousy, even though his heart no longer beat.
Little temptress!
“We have two new members in our family now. Since you’re the Lead Zombie, you’ll be called San Ling from now on,” San Wu said with a smile. “And the black panther will be Da Hei.”
Simple and easy to remember.
San Wu thought that as her combat power increased, she needed names that corresponded easily to both people and animals to remember them better.
San Wu wondered if this small courtyard would be big enough. If she used the neighboring house, it would be inconvenient to keep an eye on everything. Once they had more people, she could assign someone to guard it.
Speaking of this plan, San Wu suddenly remembered something important.
“San Ling, are you still the leader of the zombies? Can those little zombies and mutant animals obey you?”
“Yes,” Sang Ling nodded. “Unless someone stronger defeats me, then they will.”
San Wu narrowed her eyes.
So, for now, he was still the leader?
Low-level zombies lacked intelligence and were driven only by their thirst for blood. They would drink both human and mutant animal blood. Intelligent zombies varied; some were willing to coexist and be fed, while others fiercely defended their territory, hunting for food to increase their strength.
It all boiled down to a food chain. Once humans lost their absolute dominance in this world, it became survival of the fittest.
Everyone was struggling to survive.
