She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 58
Jiang Tian cried so hard that his snot ran into his mouth. “Have you forgotten us? We can’t suppress the zombie poison anymore. We’ve been looking for you so hard! If we hadn’t seen your big black leopard hunting nearby, we wouldn’t have found you!”
San Wu, without a hint of guilt, patted his shoulder. “How could I forget you?”
She gestured grandly at the bricks on the ground. “See? I was thinking of you. I knew you would come, so I prepared all these bricks.”
“You can build cellars, so a wall should be no problem!”
Jiang Tian’s sobs paused
If he believed a word San Wu said, he’d have wasted half his life. This woman definitely hadn’t remembered a thing about them.
But what could he do? He still needed her to cure the zombie virus.
“By the way, is the Eighteenth Fortress still there?” San Wu asked.
“There is no more Eighteenth Fortress. It’s now a branch of the First Fortress,” Chen Yi Bi said in a gruff voice. “All taken over by people from the First Fortress.”
San Wu smiled. “That’s good news for the residents.”
“Good? We have nowhere to go now,” Chen Yi Bi retorted unhappily.
Just as he finished speaking, a water scoop smacked him on the head.
The hot-tempered Sister Mei glared at Chen Yibi and enunciated clearly, “Talk back, and I’ll beat you to death!”
Chen Yibi almost cried out loud.
Why?
Why did San Wu have another vicious zombie?
Anyway, Jiang Tian and Chen Yibi couldn’t go back.
As San Wu expected, the two of them were quite knowledgeable about construction. With the materials prepared, they immediately started work with the help of the zombie underlings.
“These bricks are quite old. We’ll need to reinforce them somehow,” Jiang Tian said, holding his drawing and talking to San Wu.
“Don’t worry about that. I’ll plant a layer of thorn bushes,” San Wu had already planned. “Make the walls high enough to block the outside view, and set up posts for the zombies to guard and observe from. Each direction needs one.”
Jiang Tian felt deeply impressed.
Once the work was done, this place would have basic defenses.
The wall construction was in full swing. Meanwhile, San Wu exchanged many mutant beasts for two beast carriages. The mutant beast underlings from the Thorn Forest could now be put to use.
“Xiao San, remember to bring all the vegetables, especially the seeds,” San Wu said, patting her head. “Also, go to the Eighteenth Fortress and find Xiao Bai. Tell him to bring back the urn marked with ‘Ah Si’ in the southernmost corner of the cemetery.”
“Urn?” Xiao San tilted her head. “Is it tasty?”
“Can’t eat it,” San Wu glanced at the village under construction and the people occasionally watching from the Second Fortress. “It’s very important to me.”
Xiaoxiao tugged her braids. “How important?”
“More important than all our food combined,” San Wu replied. She hoped to retrieve Ah Si herself, but with so many zombies and mutant beasts here, along with Jiang Tian and Chen Yibi, and the Second Fortress watching, she couldn’t leave.
Maybe she should go?
But could she trust Xiao San with this task?
San Wu frowned in indecision.
Just then, Xiao San tugged on her clothes.
San Wu looked down, and Xiao San said firmly, “I’ll bring back the urn! I’ll work hard!”
San Wu hesitated for a moment, then smiled, saying, “I trust you, Xiao San.”
San Ling stayed behind to keep the occasionally unruly underlings in check. Zang Fei, the beautiful but temperamental zombie, sometimes went into fits of rage. So San Wu sent the reliable San Yi and Xiao San, along with fifty underlings, to fetch the item.
At the former Eighteenth Fortress, now a branch of the First Fortress, people noticed that their leader, Ji Lingbai, seemed to be in a worse mood every day.
San Wu hadn’t replied to his letter.
Hadn’t responded to his proud little wave.
In contrast, the residents were happy.
The original residents had feared that the change in management would make their lives worse.
But the new administrators from the First Fortress had lowered the number of crystal cores they had to hand in each month. They could keep most of the food they obtained from hunting mutant beasts.
Most surprising was the new rule: no killing or malicious behavior was allowed inside the fortress.
Women, children, and the elderly received basic protection.
They had prepared to be killed, but instead, they were met with kindness.
Realizing that the First Fortress wouldn’t kill them and aimed to improve order and rules, they wept with relief.
Leaving the Eighteenth Fortress had been an option, but those who did often died faster.
Going to another fortress? How could they be sure it would be better?
Even if it was better, the journey was dangerous.
Who could gamble their life on it?
A woman, only thirty but with gray hair, clutched her child tightly. She had lived a hard life, struggling to raise two children and enduring endless abuse. Now, she laughed and cried, clutching her clothes tight.
Like grasping their last shred of dignity and an intense will to survive, some cried out in relief.
“We’ve lived so long, we forgot what it’s like to be alive. It’s good to be alive!”
Ji Lingbai stood on the high platform of the fortress, listening to the chorus of cries from below.
“Those scumbags like Wang Hai are really something,” Zhang Tao sighed, standing beside him. “I saw many children, none without scars.”
Deputy leader Ruan Ying smiled, “Everyone should thank Brother Ji now.”
“Got something on your mind, Brother Ji?” Ruan Ying noticed Ji Lingbai’s unhappy expression. “Waiting for someone?”
Ji Lingbai did not deny it.
If they were to cooperate in the future, these people would eventually learn about San Wu.
