She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 65
After using several mid-level crystal cores later, she felt better.
As promised, all zombie rations were doubled. Zang Fei had recovered well enough to walk around, supervising the new underlings.
The newcomers were the ones left from the recent brawl.
Most were mid-level zombies, requiring more food. Luckily, the fish and shrimp bred well.
San Wu inspected the newly prepared fields. “We must plant lots of potatoes, as many as possible.”
“And also radishes and greens, which mature quickly.”
Chen Yibi, following her, noted everything down. “Now that the wall is done, should we recruit some capable people?”
“Zombies can help with some tasks, but not everything. Some jobs need human understanding.”
Managing food, clothing, and shelter for so many zombies was costly. Constant exchanges with the Second Fortress weren’t feasible; they couldn’t supply everything at once.
Besides, with the growing number of zombies and strange, combat-capable plants, more hands would be needed.
“Once the zombie horde is dealt with, I’ll consider it,” San Wu nodded.
She had thought about this too. They lacked enough cooks; the underlings could only do labor.
San Wu even considered setting up a canteen in the village, making mealtimes easier for the zombies.
However, she’d be selective about who to bring in.
Two days later, Zang Fei had fully recovered, and the zombies in the fortress were in excellent condition due to the ample food supply.
San Wu was selecting the zombies to accompany her on the mission. She decided to take San Ling and San Yi with her, along with Da Hei for personal protection.
Zang Fei and Xiao San would stay behind to manage the low-level zombies in the village, especially since Zang Fei hadn’t fully healed yet. Taking her out would be too risky.
Leaving these instinct-driven low-level zombies unsupervised for too long could lead to chaos.
San Wu was particularly concerned about her vegetable garden being ravaged by the hungry zombies.
In addition to the leaders, San Wu selected 150 mid-level zombies for the mission.
As she finished counting the zombies, people from various fortresses were gathering at the Second Fortress.
What was once a spacious Second Fortress quickly became crowded.
Several fortresses had sent their top fighters.
But as Xia Zhiqing glanced at Ji Lingbai sitting comfortably in his seat, he then looked over at the representative from the Third Fortress,
Wang Hai.
Xia Zhiqing’s expression darkened. The Third Fortress’s Li Yushan had sent Wang Hai, essentially publicly acknowledging that he had taken in the former leader of the Eighteenth Fortress. It was also a statement to everyone that Wang Hai was now under the protection of the Third Fortress.
In ordinary circumstances, this might have been tolerable.
But that day, with Ji Lingbai also present, the tension was palpable. Wang Hai’s twisted expression showed that a peaceful coexistence was unlikely.
“Ji Lingbai!” Wang Hai almost couldn’t contain his murderous rage. “You dare to show your face here?”
People from various fortresses observed silently, eager for a spectacle.
Ji Lingbai lounged on the only sofa chair in the hall, legs crossed and looking composed. He ignored Wang Hai and directed his cold gaze at Xia Zhiqing. “Xia Zhiqing, are these the allies you’ve gathered?”
He completely dismissed Wang Hai. “You trust him with your back? This is someone from the Eighteenth Fortress.”
He turned to the others. “Do you trust him?”
The others exchanged glances.
Indeed, it was hard to trust someone from the Eighteenth Fortress.
Their gazes on Wang Hai were tinged with doubt. In the past, they never dealt with the Eighteenth Fortress, known for its troublesome inhabitants.
Wang Hai’s expression changed, and he quickly said, “My heat weapons are excellent for fighting the zombie horde. With my weapons, we can reduce casualties significantly.”
A round-faced girl standing behind Wang Hai brightened at this. The Fortress Master had been right; Wang Hai did have a stash of heat weapons.
In the fortress, Wang Hai had been reluctant to reveal anything about the heat weapons. It was just as the Fortress Master said: bring him out once, let him see how others view him, and this stray dog would know he was no longer the leader of the Eighteenth Fortress.
If he wanted to cling to life by attaching himself to others, he had to be prepared to offer up his treasures.
The others’ expressions wavered. Heat weapons were indeed valuable. In the face of a zombie horde, running out of energy was like a tiger losing its teeth; any extra self-defense capability was welcome.
But Ji Lingbai laughed at this.
“So, Wang Hai, you plan to equip each of us with a weapon? How generous.”
Wang Hai’s face darkened. “You’re delusional!”
“Then what does it matter if you have heat weapons?” Ji Lingbai sneered. “Your weapons are only for your own use. If it were someone else, I wouldn’t worry, but you… you’d abandon everyone and run.”
He would never act with Wang Hai. Compared to the zombies in front, the knife in his back from Wang Hai was a greater threat.
It was unfortunate that Wang Hai had sought refuge with the Third Fortress. Li Yushan was a cunning fox, with significant power and influence, making him a difficult target.
While Ji Lingbai mulled over these thoughts, his expression remained unchanged.
He addressed the group decisively, “Xia Zhiqing, if you keep him, the First Fortress will not participate in this mission.”
“That won’t do!”
“Commander Ji, what about us if you leave?”
“The First Fortress must lead us.”
Before Xia Zhiqing could respond, the other fortress representatives were already panicking.
Ji Lingbai was renowned for his combat prowess, having survived battles against two major zombie leaders. Recently, he even faced off against three zombie kings.
