She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 70
San Wu looked up and saw that Granny Hua and several old men who had been fighting in the front lines were now protecting an old man with white hair who had lost a hand.
Granny Hua’s eyes were bloodshot, her white hair tips stained with a thick, pungent liquid.
The elderly man, who had lost a hand, was barely able to stand.
When the mutant beasts charged, it wasn’t Ji Lingbai and the others who rushed forward first, but rather the elderly warriors of the Second Fortress.
Riding on Da Hei’s back, San Wu observed the Second Fortress’s combat strategy.
The oldest ones stood on the outermost layer of the battle circle, the middle-aged ability holders in the middle, and the youngest and most talented in the innermost circle.
Layer upon layer, like guarding a flame in the icy wilderness.
She had never seen such a combat strategy in the apocalypse. Even the top-ranked First Fortress prioritized their own survival, helping others only when they had spare energy. After all, everyone wanted to live.
Where there was war, there would be casualties.
Fortunately, they had many people and their combat power far exceeded that of the mutant beasts, so the casualties were not heavy.
After half an hour, the mutant beasts were either dead or had fled.
The leading beast was a mutant lion, its massive body half slashed and bloodied by wind blades, the other half burnt by flames.
It lay on the ground, panting heavily.
Xia Zhiqing had special interrogators who extracted information from the intelligent leader-level mutant beasts. It didn’t take long to confirm that this mutant lion was indeed under the command of a major zombie leader, sent to scout.
Although they had expected the major zombie leader to come this way, confirming it still brought a chill to the team.
Even Xia Zhiqing, usually smiling, sat on a stool deep in thought.
The various fortress members gathered in groups, whispering things that San Wu couldn’t hear.
Ji Lingbai stood beside her. San Wu glanced at him and asked, “I saw the Second Fortress’s combat method just now.”
Ji Lingbai looked down at her. In the midst of the bloodshed, neither of them felt like mentioning the drunken incident.
“That’s unique to the Second Fortress,” Ji Lingbai explained. “They believe in preserving the young to ensure an endless future.”
“What about your fortress?” San Wu was curious about the philosophy of the top-ranked fortress.
Ji Lingbai hesitated briefly before replying, “In our fortress, only the weak are given certain protections inside. Once outside, everyone is responsible for their own life and death.”
He looked at San Wu and added, “We prioritize the strong who are already capable. The stronger the people who stay, the more they can protect others. No one is obligated to sacrifice for anyone else.”
“Your philosophies are completely different,” San Wu noted, glancing at Xia Zhiqing. “But I can see that everyone in the Second Fortress is doing it voluntarily.” She could tell they genuinely wanted to protect the future.
“Yes,” Ji Lingbai agreed, looking at Granny Hua and the others. “That’s what makes the Second Fortress remarkable. When the older generation pours their heart into raising the next, those who grow strong will, in turn, protect the next generation.”
He continued, “Although I find that old woman’s stubbornness annoying, I have to admit she’s respectable. Sacrifice is a difficult concept.”
San Wu suddenly recalled Granny Hua’s words.
When Granny Hua had forcibly taken her, San Wu had angrily said it was unnecessary.
But Granny Hua replied, “You’re wrong, girl. It’s because we old folks insist on it that the Second Fortress is strong and will only grow stronger!”
At first, it seemed like the old woman was just being stubborn and annoying.
Now, San Wu understood a bit more.
The warmth and unity of the Second Fortress were unexpected. Imagining herself in the Second Fortress, placed in the safest spot like those young people, she wondered if she would stand up and step into the outer circle once she had grown strong.
She didn’t know.
“Of course, don’t think the Second Fortress’s model is easy,” Ji Lingbai warned. “Many refuse to accept it, and some leave even after experiencing it. Everyone has different beliefs.”
“In the end, you need to be strong yourself. Whether you help others or not, you need to have the choice,” Ji Lingbai said, checking his team before looking back at San Wu. “Every philosophy has its supporters, but ultimately, they all aim for the survival of humanity.”
With that, Ji Lingbai led his team to clean up the remaining mutant beasts, preventing a surprise attack later.
San Wu stopped pondering philosophies. She already had plans for the future.
She glanced at the private circle of the Third Fortress.
Then at the Second Fortress’s encrypted circle.
Everyone was whispering.
Alright, it seemed like they had important discussions that a powerful ally like her couldn’t be part of.
With Ji Lingbai gone, the only person she knew here, San Wu didn’t want to sit idly by. She blew the whistle hanging around her neck.
Everyone was startled and turned to look.
They saw the previously seated zombies stand up and start crowding towards San Wu.
They had stickers on their chests, indicating Red, Green, and Blue teams.
“Red team to the right, Green team in the middle, Blue team to the left.”
San Wu directed them while standing in the center, “We practiced this at home. No crowding. Healthy zombies take care of the injured ones. Line up properly.”
Although the zombies had practiced this at home many times, their memory was really poor. They soon forgot the rules, and the lined-up zombies crowded together, hitting each other.
Some zombies were twisting their heads with their hands, looking like they were having seizures.
Everyone stopped their small meetings and watched San Wu’s zombies fight each other. They curiously asked, “Why do your zombies keep twisting their heads?”
San Wu glanced at the person who spoke.
“Twisting their brains, don’t you get it?” She replied and then rushed out to control the scene.
