She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 75
San Wu went to choose the gift that the Second Fortress had promised her.
Meanwhile, the leaders of the various fortresses held a small meeting.
“Thank you all for your hard work. I really appreciate it,” Xia Zhiqing said sincerely. “The promised rewards will be given to each of you.”
The others waved it off.
“It’s what we should do. You’ve always been there for us when we needed help, Fortress Master.”
“As our numbers dwindle, it’s more important than ever for us to stand together.”
“Even though each of our fortresses has different philosophies, when it comes to important matters, we all know how to prioritize. Don’t worry about it.”
The round-faced girl from the Third Fortress remained silent. After all, her fortress had suffered the heaviest losses this time, and her mood was understandably grim.
“By the way, Fortress Master, what’s the deal with that person?” The leader of the Seventh Fortress asked, his expression puzzled. “I just saw the village you mentioned—it’s surrounded by high walls with a bunch of zombies guarding it. Anyone who didn’t know better would think it’s a small fortress.”
His comment sparked curiosity, and others quickly chimed in, “Yeah, that San Wu is really strange. How can so many zombies listen to her?”
“Exactly, Fortress Master, I thought she’d brought all the zombies out with her, but it turns out there are still so many in the village. She must have three or four hundred under her control by now, right?”
“Are there other people in the village? Are the zombies being raised by those people?”
The group began speculating in various directions.
The round-faced girl, who had been silent for a long time, suddenly raised her head and asked, “San Wu’s village is so close to the Second Fortress. Does that mean she has a very close cooperation with the Second Fortress?”
She stopped short of asking the follow-up question on her mind—since San Wu and Ji Lingbai’s relationship was so complicated, did it also imply a close cooperation between the first and second fortresses?
Xia Zhiqing glanced around at the gathered leaders, then let out a light laugh and set down his teacup.
“To be honest, San Wu has nothing to do with me. We just know each other in passing.”
“If you want to know more about her, you can ask Captain Ji. He’s here right now.”
Everyone fell silent.
They had almost forgotten…
Since earlier, Ji Lingbai had been quietly skimming the surface of his tea with the lid of his cup, the sharp sound of ceramic scraping echoing through the room like nails on a chalkboard.
Xia Zhiqing glanced at the now silent crowd, inwardly sneering.
His own temperament was mild, but Ji Lingbai was anything but.
Ji Lingbai was known to hold grudges and act on whims. No one present dared to provoke him.
With his eyes lowered, Ji Lingbai spoke in a voice that seemed to carry thorns in the otherwise quiet meeting room, “I didn’t hear what you all were saying earlier. What was it? Repeat it, I’m listening now.”
Xia Zhiqing suppressed the amusement in his eyes and quietly sipped his tea.
He understood what these people were thinking. Someone like San Wu, who was both mysterious and powerful, would unsettle them if they couldn’t control her or if she ended up being used by others.
It was human nature.
After three minutes of silence, the round-faced girl wanted to speak, but when Ji Lingbai’s cold gaze landed on her, she got goosebumps all over.
“So, nothing else to say?” Ji Lingbai asked with a satisfied smile. “Then you can continue your chat. I’ve got something else to attend to, so I’ll…”
“Ji! Ling! Bai!”
Suddenly, San Wu’s loud voice echoed from downstairs, mixed with a few enthusiastic grunts.
Everyone turned to look out the window.
The very person they had been discussing was happily waving at Ji Lingbai, holding the reins of five large white pigs that were covered in fresh manure.
“Are you done yet, Ji Lingbai? Come visit our village!” She was still curious about the contents of the letter he had mentioned earlier.
The five pigs, excited, flicked their ears, grunting loudly, “Oink, oink!”
Ji Lingbai: “…”
He cleared his throat, then glanced at Xia Zhiqing with a peculiar, almost smug look, letting his gaze linger for three seconds. “Well, I’ll be going then. My apologies, everyone.”
Xia Zhiqing: “…” What a weirdo.
After Ji Lingbai left the room, everyone fell into deep thought.
“I remember Captain Ji used to be a clean freak. How can he tolerate the smell of those pigs? And why did he seem so pleased?”
“Maybe it’s the power of love.”
“Nonsense, I think it’s because San Wu is going to treat him to braised pork.”
Braised pork… The mere thought made everyone feel a bit hungry.
San Wu had received four sows, a boar, and some Sichuan pepper seeds from the Second Fortress. She felt like she could happily return to her farming life once more.
Her underlings quickly set up a simple place to keep the pigs in and even used lake water to bathe them.
The pigs were pampered, which would lead to better-tasting meat.
Meanwhile, San Wu had finally understood the content of the letter Ji Lingbai had sent.
“So, you’re suggesting that I provide you with a certain amount of vegetables and other supplies regularly, and in return, you’ll give our village some protection and exchange for daily necessities?”
“Yes,” Ji Lingbai nodded.
“Let me think about it,” San Wu frowned.
Ji Lingbai’s proposal was indeed feasible.
She also realized that after her participation in resisting the zombie horde, the other fortress leaders, though they hadn’t said anything to her directly, were definitely curious about her ability.
The thought of dealing with the remaining fifteen fortresses gave San Wu a headache.
However, openly aligning with the First Fortress would allow her to maintain some small-scale trades with the Second Fortress, improving the overall life of her village.
