She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 76
Though the First Fortress was a bit far away, in a partnership like this, distance could be a blessing—it would prevent them from interfering too much in her affairs.
The more she thought about it, the more she realized this deal was worth it.
“Can I give you an answer tomorrow?” San Wu looked at Ji Lingbai, her tone unusually soft.
Ji Lingbai, caught off guard by her intense gaze, avoided eye contact for a moment before coolly nodding, “Alright.”
He didn’t stay long, quickly returning with his team.
On the way back, Ji Lingbai was in an exceptionally good mood.
His deputy, Ruan Ying, noticed and asked with a smile, “Is there some good news?”
Otherwise, why would Ji Lingbai be so happy?
“Yes, something like that,” Ji Lingbai replied, turning slightly. “When we get back to the fortress tonight, make sure you have someone deliver some things to San Wu right away.”
“Essentials, things girls like.”
“Get some plant seeds, a juicer… Oh, and definitely send a solar generator.”
He didn’t believe that San Wu could resist being tempted by such gifts. She was already very close to agreeing.
“Ruan Ying, do you think we should try digging an underground tunnel from our fortress to the village? It would make communication easier.”
“Or should we just build another fortress over there?”
The more Ruan Ying listened, the more ridiculous it sounded. Finally, he couldn’t help but raise his voice, “Captain Ji, are you planning to propose? Is this your dowry?”
Ji Lingbai, for once, was at a loss for words.
“Stop talking nonsense,” Ji Lingbai said, regaining his composure. “I’m doing this for the future of the fortress.”
Ruan Ying thought Ji Lingbai’s explanation was a load of rubbish.
He coughed lightly. “Alright, you’re the boss, whatever you say.”
“But should we inform Luo Mingcheng about this?”
Ruan Ying frowned and said, “The Eighteenth Fortress doesn’t really need a figurehead anymore, does it?”
“No, it doesn’t.” Considering the unique situation with San Wu, Ji Lingbai planned to turn the Eighteenth Fortress into a high-combat fortress. The fewer people who knew about San Wu’s ability, the better.
Ruan Ying sighed in relief. “I was just worried you’d get tired of managing things and hand it over to someone else. Luo Mingcheng has been pretty obedient all these years, not getting greedy despite holding that position for so long.”
Luo Mingcheng handled the fortress’s mundane tasks. Back when Ji Lingbai wanted to focus on improving his strength and avoiding all the tedious meetings between fortress leaders, he assigned Luo Mingcheng, who excelled at such tasks.
“But Luo Mingcheng’s biggest flaw is his stubbornness. How did he fall for someone like Lin Ran? And he even lets her have her way in the fortress,” Ruan Ying shook his head and sighed. “I guess no one’s perfect.”
“How do you think Lin Ran managed to get Luo Mingcheng to like her?” If it weren’t for Luo Mingcheng’s years of hard work managing the fortress, everyone would’ve put up with Lin Ran just to spare his feelings. Her title of Deputy Fortress Master might look impressive, but she had little real power, and most of their team didn’t think much of her.
Only Zhang Tao, the chubby guy with the weakest combat skills in the team, buttered her up, making her believe she could throw her weight around.
With everything that had happened lately, it took Ji Lingbai a while to remember who Lin Ran even was.
“Get those things ready and send them to San Wu tonight,” he said, not wanting to waste time on trivial matters. “Can’t you focus more on the important stuff?”
Ruan Ying: “…Fine.”
Meanwhile, San Wu was busy having her zombies build a pigsty.
She was also arranging rooms for the new members, but the zombie crew insisted on setting rules for the newcomers, fearing they might be disobedient. So, they took the new zombies out for some nighttime training.
Two didn’t return. Apparently, they were too unruly and had their heads smashed in front of everyone.
San Wu didn’t bother to intervene, letting them handle it as they saw fit.
She slept soundly that night, but the next morning, she woke up feeling completely bewildered.
Rubbing her eyes, San Wu decided to prepare some potatoes for breakfast.
But then she saw Kui Kui, with Tu Dou and his child, peeking in through the doorway.
“What are you all doing?” San Wu asked curiously.
“Master! There’s so much stuff! That uncle brought a ton of good things,” Tu Dou said excitedly, bouncing in place.
San Wu glanced outside and saw workers from the First Fortress unloading carts full of supplies.
She stepped out to find Ruan Ying overseeing the inventory. He smiled when he saw her. “Miss San Wu, I’m Ruan Ying, Captain Ji’s deputy. Captain Ji asked me to bring you these items.”
“But I haven’t agreed yet,” San Wu said, taking a cautious step back. “You can’t just force me to accept!”
Having dealt with many people because of Ji Lingbai’s laziness, Ruan Ying maintained his polite, professional smile.
“Whether you agree to cooperate or not, these are yours.”
San Wu considered another possibility. “Well, considering how much your captain ate at my place, I guess this is only fair.”
Ruan Ying took a deep breath. “I don’t think Captain Ji sent these just because of a few meals. Those meals weren’t worth all this.”
San Wu raised an eyebrow. “Then let’s see what you’ve got. Show me these treasures.”
Ruan Ying had his men unload the larger items from the carts.
Solar-powered lights, a solar generator, a juicer, solar-powered flashlights, a rice cooker… Even an electric fan was included.
The small appliances were nice, but the solar-powered equipment was the real treasure.
Solar-powered gear was highly valued in the fortresses because the materials were hard to come by, and solar energy was a renewable resource—a priceless commodity in the apocalypse.
