She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 81
Jiang Tian clicked his tongue in amazement and slipped away the next second.
When he reached the second floor, the group of zombie extras had stopped screaming. They were all inside their rooms, sipping diluted carrot juice San Wu had made to soothe their throats.
On the first floor, the zombie that had been covered in blood stopped pretending to be dead. It ran off, wobbling like a chicken with splayed legs, rushing to San Wu to claim credit for its performance.
San Wu was watering the newly seeded vegetable garden.
Green shoots had already started to sprout, and she had high hopes for this batch of plants.
Knowing that the zombies who came to learn were all behaving obediently, San Wu felt reassured.
With this round, she would first spread her reputation. She was confident that her village’s high-quality education would continuously attract new clients.
San Wu felt very pleased and even wanted to take this opportunity to scout for reliable drifter workers.
Her village could use a few more residents; Jiang Tian and Chen Yibi were getting too busy handling everything on their own.
It would be ideal if a few people who could cook came. San Wu planned to set up a communal dining hall for the zombies.
She also needed a tailor shop. This time, she’d taken mostly large-sized clothing because she was worried the zombies might not fit into smaller sizes. If the clothes were too big, they could still be worn after being tightened a bit.
San Wu walked to the wall. The first layer of thorny vines had already entwined around it, growing thick and strong.
She planned to plant another layer.
While she was here planning the village’s future, a few of Wang Hai’s close associates had finally made their way near the Second Fortress.
They disguised themselves as drifter workers and went to a trading post, hoping to gather information about San Wu.
However, just as they finally reached their turn, they overheard the group from the Second Fortress chatting.
“Have you prepared the meat and clothing?”
“Let’s deliver them to San Wu tomorrow, just like Granny Hua and the others.”
The spies exchanged puzzled glances.
What was going on?
Wasn’t it said that the Second Fortress looked down on San Wu?
“Brother, if you want to head over to San Wu’s, you’d better sign up quickly. I’ve already seen several people preparing their supplies, just waiting for her to collect them tomorrow!”
Had the people from the Second Fortress stooped so low?
Were they really that desperate?
The spies felt their hearts tremble, and their faces turned pale.
The spies were so startled by what they heard that they were left dazed.
After quickly completing their trades, they hurried away, afraid of raising suspicion.
After all, their last attempt had failed because an undercover agent hadn’t handled things well, leading to the First Fortress attacking.
They found a spot where many drifter workers gathered. Casually, one of the spies approached two people and asked, “Hey, brother, let me ask you something. I just came here today with my younger brother. I’ve heard the Second Fortress treats drifters fairly, with good exchange rates. But why is there another fortress next to it?”
Perhaps influenced by the atmosphere around the Second Fortress, the drifters there seemed more easy going than in other places.
Unlike near the Eighteenth Fortress, where even casual conversations felt suspicious.
“What fortress?” The person being questioned took a moment to realize. Then, with a sudden understanding, he said, “Oh, you mean that village with the high walls? That’s not really a fortress; it’s just a walled village.”
The spy nodded, guiding the conversation further, “Isn’t that still a fortress? They even surrounded it with thorny vines, with so many zombies guarding the place. It looks as heavily fortified as any other fortress. I’ve seen other drifters fence off their land, but none of them have set things up as properly as this one.”
“Well, they’ve got skills. Their fighters are strong.” The person, washing his hands, said a couple more words before slamming his door shut.
They hadn’t yet asked the most important question, but they didn’t dare approach anyone else. Several nearby drifters had already started eyeing the strangers.
“I’ll stay here and keep watch,” said the oldest spy. “You two head back and report to Boss Wang Hai.”
“Be careful,” they warned.
“I know,” he nodded. “As long as I don’t enter the fortress, I should be relatively safe.”
“After all, no one will know we were once from the Eighteenth Fortress. Fortunately, we never had much contact with people from the other fortresses back then.”
