She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 83
The old residents of the Second Fortress, who usually went out in teams to collect crystal cores, hunt mutated beasts, or gather resources, had a decent amount of wealth.
They secretly thought to themselves that they would definitely sign up early the next day.
Back in the village, San Wu had the obstructive barricades removed, and the view was finally clear again.
Ji Lingbai was sitting in the hall of her house.
San Wu had chosen the largest house in the village, which had a courtyard. She even had them dig a small fish pond, where she kept fish and shrimp as usual.
As for the chickens, since they could easily cause a smell, they were kept outside.
Tu Dou was resting with his two sons—he had recently given birth to another one, so now there were three little potatoes in total, all drinking water and taking a break.
Kui Kui had run off again to fight with other zombies, while the non-mutated sunflowers had grown all over the field. San Wu was preparing to roast some sunflower seeds from the last harvest.
The rosebush that wasn’t of much use shrank into a corner, trembling with its leaves.
Xiao Luobo had wandered off somewhere again, having nearly explored the entire area by now.
“Ji Lingbai, there was some rice among the seeds you sent earlier. Once it’s harvested, I’ll send some over to you,” San Wu’s voice came from behind.
Ji Lingbai turned and said, “How will you send it to our fortress?”
San Wu said, “With a beast cart, I guess.”
“But beast carts are slow, don’t hold much, and more importantly, they’re not safe,” Ji Lingbai replied, sitting on a stool. “I’ve come up with two plans: either we dig an underground tunnel from your village to our fortress—”
“Or we build another fortress nearby. But in terms of time and resources, digging the tunnel is more practical.”
“Then dig it,” San Wu agreed readily, as long as it benefited her. “We had lots of things like that before the apocalypse, like subways and such. It’s a shame they’re all abandoned now.”
“Your fortress has more skilled workers and equipment. You can handle it,” San Wu admitted that she didn’t have the technical talent or the necessary tools. “Even with the help of various abilities, this tunnel won’t be done immediately, so in the meantime, I’ll still use the beast carts to deliver goods.”
“Our fortress has quite a few skilled individuals. We can use explosive-type ability holders to break through the tunnel, ice-type ability holders for temporary reinforcement, and plant-type ability holders to prevent cave-ins later. That way, we’ll move a lot faster. We’ve dug plenty of underground tunnels before, so we have the experience,” Ji Lingbai explained. “Once we get started, you can lend me some of your zombies. If we work around the clock, it’ll be done even quicker.”
“Sure, but you’ll have to feed my zombies. I’ll supply the food, but you need to have someone trustworthy cook it,” San Wu narrowed her eyes. “And they must be trustworthy!”
“Don’t worry. I’ve been around longer than you,” Ji Lingbai glanced at Jiang Tian, who was working outside. “But what about you? There are only three living people in your fortress. Will that be enough?”
“Of course not,” San Wu shrugged. “But I have strict standards for choosing people—I’d rather have none than pick the wrong ones. I’ll take my time.”
She had ambitions. She’d even considered that, as the village expanded, she might bring in a full set of equipment. It wasn’t impossible for the place to evolve into a unique fortress one day. However, if rushing growth meant allowing malicious people in, she’d rather keep it as a small village forever.
Seeing that she had a clear plan, Ji Lingbai didn’t dwell on the topic and shifted to discussing future exchanges of goods and food.
“We don’t have much in the way of research products, so we won’t be able to share that,” Ji Lingbai drew a line on the paper in front of him.
San Wu nodded. “I didn’t plan on asking for your research products. But do set aside some seeds and solar-powered devices for me. Prioritize giving them to me, okay? Don’t let some other fortress with slick operators snatch them up. After all, we’re such good friends—let’s not be so distant~.”
Ji Lingbai choked for a moment. “Just provide us with more vegetables. I’ll set the value of vegetables at three times that of meat.”
“Meat can’t always be kept alive during transport. The trip is too bumpy. But I’m sure you won’t mind since we’re such good friends—no need to be so distant~.”
Ji Lingbai curled his fingers and looked up at San Wu. “Dead meat is only worth ninety percent of its original value.”
San Wu pursed her lips. Ji Lingbai gave her a glance before continuing, “As for borrowing your zombies…”
San Wu jabbed her pen into the paper. “I’m not lending out zombies.”
Ji Lingbai frowned. “Didn’t you just say you’d lend them?”
“I only lend them to people I’m close with,” San Wu leaned on her chin and looked at him. “But to a man who makes me take responsibility for fish and shrimp dying in transit? I don’t know you at all, so no, I won’t lend them. We’re very distant!”
“Aww, don’t get upset,” San Wu said with a grin. “If you’re mad, I’ll just go partner with the Second Fortress. After all, no one else has my vegetables, but everything you provide, Xia Zhiqing can give me too. And we’re closer—no need for an underground tunnel.”
