She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 84
Ji Lingbai finally understood why Ruan Ying hadn’t wanted to come with him to negotiate this time.
Because dealing with San Wu was… difficult.
But undeniably, she was irreplaceable.
He folded the paper in his hand in half. “Alright. As long as the meat’s fresh, dead or alive, it’s the same price.”
San Wu was satisfied.
With the deal more or less settled, San Wu glanced outside at the dimming sky. “You should go now—it’s getting late.”
“Go?”
Ji Lingbai placed the pen down neatly beside him, crossed his long legs, and rested his hands on his knees. “Go where? I’m staying here tonight.”
San Wu was confused.
Ji Lingbai’s eyes curved into crescent moons as he teased her, mimicking her tone, “After all, we’re such good friends, aren’t we? Would you really send me away in the middle of the night?”
San Wu turned around with a conflicted expression. It wasn’t that she minded letting him stay for dinner or the night.
The issue was she had plans for that night. She needed to take care of something important. But with Ji Lingbai here… was she supposed to bring him along?
That wouldn’t be right…
San Wu tugged at Ji Lingbai’s sleeve, trying to suppress the excitement bubbling up inside her as she tentatively asked, “Xiao Bai, if you’re staying, do you want to come with me tonight to do something fun?”
Ji Lingbai almost thought he’d heard wrong.
“What did you say?”
He nearly bit his tongue, his expression flashing between pale and flushed before settling on a bright red at the tips of his ears. His eyes, glaring at San Wu, made her think he looked strangely… appetizing.
“You know, to do something fun…”
But Ji Lingbai, his face still red, sternly replied, “You’re a girl! Don’t be so reckless with your words!”
That day, he was dressed even more formally than the last time she saw him. The golden buttons on his outfit reflected little shards of light in his palms. He curled his fingers, suddenly struck by a thought.
Could it be… San Wu liked him?
He remembered the time they’d been drinking.
“The last time, when you got drunk, you acted like this too. Is this something you think you can just do casually?” Ji Lingbai, normally so calm and composed when making decisions, found himself at a loss for how to handle this situation.
If San Wu really liked him, what should he say?
With her temper, if he rejected her, would that ruin their partnership?
In a flash of panic, Ji Lingbai was completely at a loss.
San Wu: “???” She had no idea what Ji Lingbai was talking about.
“Well, if you’re not coming with me, you might as well head back. What’s the point of staying if you’re not joining me on this? I don’t leave outsiders in the fortress when I’m gone,” San Wu frowned, trying to reason with him.
Ji Lingbai immediately caught on to the key point of her words.
“You’re leaving the fortress? If I’m gone, where exactly are you heading?” Ji Lingbai stood in front of San Wu, his back to the darkening sky outside the window.
“If you’re not coming, I’m obviously going to find someone else to go with me!” San Wu thought this guy was acting completely nonsensical.
“Are you seriously going to find someone else to go with you?” Ji Lingbai’s voice shot up in pitch, “You… you don’t even care who it is?” He was so flustered that he could barely finish his sentence.
San Wu was on the verge of rolling her eyes. “I asked you to come with me, but you refused! Ji Lingbai, being inconsistent is a condition, you know!”
She took a large gulp of tea and decided to ignore him, poking her head out of the window. “Kui Kui, call Xiao Luobo over.”
Soon, Xiao Luobo appeared in front of San Wu.
“Master!” Xiao Luobo had grown noticeably bigger. San Wu mused that if she had enough radishes, she could probably send them all to dig tunnels directly.
“Did you finish scouting the area? You’re sure it’s just those few that are the problem?”
Xiao Luo had been exploring the area lately, and that day’s reconnaissance mission had clearly uncovered something significant.
“What problem are you talking about?” Ji Lingbai felt like his emotions were on a roller coaster again. “What exactly are you two discussing?”
“Oh, it’s about tonight’s task. Weren’t you the one who didn’t want to come with me?” San Wu responded flatly.
Ji Lingbai was silent for a moment, then asked, with difficulty, “The task you’re talking about—is it something serious?”
“Of course! What else did you think?” San Wu leaned against the window. “So, are you coming or not?”
Ji Lingbai took a deep breath, a swirl of emotions churning inside him. He braced himself against the table for a long moment, struggling to push down his earlier confusion, and finally squeezed out one word, “Coming.”
From then on, no matter what San Wu said, he must—he absolutely must—stop overthinking!
Since Ji Lingbai had agreed to come along, San Wu explained the situation. “Xiao Luobo always liked burrowing around the area.”
Ji Lingbai naturally added, “Mostly to gather intel for you, right?”
San Wu was momentarily caught off guard. “Friends don’t nitpick over such trivial details!”
“Do you know what Xiao Luobo discovered today while out exploring?” San Wu leaned in closer and lowered her voice, “She found a few spies from Wang Hai’s side!”
San Wu had only learned about this after Xiao Luobo returned.
She gave a cold snort. “If those spies were doing something else, I wouldn’t care. But they’re going around snooping about my status, my relationship with the Second Fortress, and… my relationship with you.”
“Xiao Luobo followed one of the spies for a while, mimicking everything he asked.”
