She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 87
The more electric lights, the better! Ideally, there should be enough for the whole village, so everyone could have a lantern fruit, making it easy to carry everywhere.
“I don’t have any,” Denglong Guo curled its branches around San Wu’s hand, its voice as tender as freshly whipped cream. “I mutated thanks to my master, but I can’t do it on my own.”
“Alright, let’s head home quickly.” San Wu glanced at the sky. “The silly rose said there would be heavy rain later tonight.”
Ji Lingbai took a bite of the fruit that had been thrown at him. The next moment, a bitter taste surged up his throat.
His expression changed, and he spat out the fruit. “You said this thing is good?”
San Wu, cradling Denglong Guo, turned around. “Yeah, if your tongue is fine, you’d definitely find it delicious.”
Denglong Guo giggled, his branches shaking as he said in San Wu’s mind, “Only those I like will find my fruit tasty, hmph! Let him taste the bitterness!”
Hearing this in her mind, San Wu fell silent.
“Maybe, maybe your fruit just wasn’t ripe enough,” she attempted to change the subject. “Let’s hurry back.”
Ji Lingbai didn’t leave the remaining fruits lying on the ground; he burned them to ashes with a flick of his hand.
“Denglong Guo, turn off the light.” Otherwise, they would attract unwanted attention on their way back, especially from the Second Fortress.
Before they had gone far, San Wu heard many voices nearby and saw obvious lights in the darkness. It wasn’t from the Second Fortress or her village.
“I remember there’s a small abandoned village near ours and the Second Fortress, but there wasn’t anyone living there before,” San Wu furrowed her brow. “Why is it so lively over there now?”
Ji Lingbai flew up high to take a look. When he returned, he said, “There are people; we’ll find out when we go back.”
“You can fly high where others can’t see you. Take Denglong Guo back.” San Wu nudged Denglong Guo toward Ji Lingbai. “I’ll walk back with the others.”
Ji Lingbai cast a glance at the green sprout that had fed him the bitter fruit, his eyes clearly showing disdain.
Though he was displeased, he still grabbed a sapling and took Denglong Guo into the sky.
San Ling and San Fei followed behind San Wu. She noticed San Fei’s gaze was constantly glued to the direction of the Second Fortress.
“San Fei, why do you keep looking at the Second Fortress?” San Wu casually asked. “I heard from San Ling that you were trying to ram the door of the Second Fortress when he saw you. Why?”
San Fei just shook her head without speaking.
“Alright then.” San Wu sighed. “If there’s a chance, I’ll take you to see that fortress.”
Even if it was merely an instinctual action, there had to be a reason behind it.
But before that, San Wu felt it was more important to understand the group of people rushing toward the nearby village with multiple beast carts.
San Wu stood a short distance away, watching as at least two hundred people gathered.
Supplies were being unloaded from the beast carts, and a neat-haired woman stood on top of a high crate, commanding others with her hands behind her back.
“Keep it down; don’t attract the zombies outside.”
“Group clothes and food separately; don’t mix them up.”
“Be quick; otherwise, we won’t get to rest tonight.”
San Wu watched with intrigue; these were clearly drifters, and it was her first time seeing such a collective group of them.
After all, there were only eighteen remaining fortresses, so there had to be such communal modes of drifters. They were safer than the drifters yet had more freedom than those in fortresses, living in a self-sufficient community while helping each other survive.
That short-haired woman was actually quite pretty, with a sharp chin and large, dark eyes, but she looked fierce when frowning.
Her figure was pretty good too; San Wu could see her waist, which was quite curvy, as she raised her hand and the hem of her shirt lifted slightly.
“Don’t touch the stuff in the white box; that’s for the Second Fortress!” The short-haired woman’s tone softened noticeably when she mentioned the white box.
Suddenly, Grandma Hua’s voice rang out, and San Wu saw her coming with Ding Fang and Ding Yuan, all laughing and chatting.
Were they acquaintances?
San Wu squinted. Were these people from the Second Fortress, similar to her collaboration with Ji Lingbai?
“I’ll be careful with the goods that Grandma Hua wants,” Zhang Fen jumped down from the crate, her eyes curving into a smile. “Where’s Fortress Master Xia?”
“Oh, he’s busy with other matters,” Grandma Hua said as she directed people to check the boxes.
A flicker of disappointment crossed Zhang Fen’s face but quickly returned to a smile. “No worries; I just thought it would be better to deliver the goods in front of Fortress Master Xia. But having you here, Grandma Hua, is just as good.”
Grandma Hua was especially pleased with the supplies they had brought back, and San Wu noticed some medical equipment inside, making her envious.
“Zhang Fen, are you planning to settle here with your brothers?” Grandma Hua looked at them unloading the goods, which indicated they were planning to stay for a while.
“Of course! Why wouldn’t we be welcomed?” Zhang Fen’s voice was cheerful. “My brothers and I have been traveling north and south together to gather supplies, and as our numbers increase, it’s getting harder to keep moving. Settling down is much better.”
“Since I’ve collaborated the most with the Second Fortress and know you all well, let’s be neighbors,” she added, glancing over at San Wu’s village. “But I was originally thinking about that big village to the east; I noticed they’ve built walls there. Did you do that?”
“Not us,” Ding Fang chimed in eagerly. “It’s San Wu’s village!”
Hearing her name made San Wu pay closer attention.
She wondered what this woman’s intentions were. If she was trying to claim territory, she needed to be cautious.
“San Wu?” Zhang Fen furrowed her brow. An unfamiliar name popping up just as she was about to settle down was hardly pleasant.
