She Raised Zombies in the Apocalypse - Chapter 88
Ding Fang and Ding Yuan nodded eagerly. They had been missing the exhilarating times spent fighting alongside San Wu, and their eyes sparkled with excitement as they spoke of her.
“San Wu is amazing! The number of zombies she commands is no less than your brothers!” Ding Fang exclaimed, animated, “Those zombies listen to her so well; she even has a zombie training class that turns the zombies sent over to our fortress into obedient helpers!”
“Really? Isn’t that an exaggeration?” Zhang Fen looked to Grandma Hua for confirmation. “Is what they say true?”
Grandma Hua praised San Wu, “She’s a capable child! Both the fortress master and I think highly of her. I hope we can collaborate more deeply in the future.”
Zhang Fen raised her eyebrows in surprise at this. “What? Isn’t she considered a stable ally of the Second Fortress?” Zhang Fen sat down on the crate.
“Of course not; she…” Grandma Hua started to explain, but her gaze caught sight of someone notable.
“Ji Lingbai?” Grandma Hua’s tone changed as she saw Ji Lingbai walking towards them. “What are you doing here?”
Zhang Fen also recognized Ji Lingbai and immediately stood up from the crate, and the workers around them quietly shifted their attention to this interaction.
“I’m here to pick someone up,” Ji Lingbai replied, not stopping as he walked forward.
San Wu was standing not far away in the woods. The night air was chilly, and Ji Lingbai noticed that two buttons of her coat had come undone. “Why aren’t you going home? Planning to sleep outside?”
San Wu stepped out, relieved that Grandma Hua and the others couldn’t see them.
“I was just waiting for them to finish up before going over,” she said, wanting to check if that woman posed any threat.
“I know that woman. She originally led a small team of twenty that traveled around doing trades with various fortresses,” Ji Lingbai explained, his gaze still lingering on San Wu’s undone buttons.
Should I help her fix that? Would she think too much of it?
Ji Lingbai frowned in contemplation, continuing, “As her group grew, she started cooperating mainly with the Second Fortress. It seems she’s planning to settle here now.”
San Wu nodded, realizing the situation now. “But why were you hiding in the woods? It’s cold at night. Next time, don’t hide. Grandma Hua is there too; if you want to go home, just walk straight through. Who cares who’s in front?”
San Wu looked up at Ji Lingbai. “There are so many people, and I only have San Ling and Sang Fei with me. You think I’m like you, with high combat strength and great deterrence? It’d be dangerous to walk straight through there; are you joking?”
Just then, they reached a spot where Grandma Hua and the others could see them.
Upon seeing that Ji Lingbai was here to pick up San Wu, Grandma Hua understood his presence.
“San Wu!” Ding Fang and Ding Yuan rushed over, excitedly getting closer. “What were you doing out at night with San Ling?”
San Wu casually replied, “Just taking a stroll.”
Zhang Fen had been sizing up San Wu ever since she heard her name.
San Wu gained a little weight and didn’t look as skinny as before; her cheeks had some meat on them.
Her nose was high and straight, and even after regaining some weight, her features were well-defined, vibrant like a blooming flower.
With her hands in her pockets, she appeared relaxed and casual, giving a polite, distant smile to Ding Fang and Ding Yuan, but her gaze toward Ji Lingbai was much more natural, as if they were just regular friends.
Zhang Fen instantly noticed that San Wu was closer to Ji Lingbai, clearly indicating that she wasn’t someone nurtured by the Second Fortress.
This San Wu was definitely independent.
“We’ll head back first,” San Wu said, addressing Grandma Hua. “Let’s talk more tomorrow.”
After the two of them walked a short distance away, Zhang Fen noticed them whispering to each other. Then San Wu suddenly pulled Ji Lingbai over and said something in his ear, her expression looking quite fierce.
“Has Ji Lingbai’s temper improved so much?” Zhang Fen couldn’t believe it. The last time she had dealings with the First Fortress was two years ago.
Back then, when she was exchanging supplies, she hadn’t even spoken to Ji Lingbai directly. She happened to see him returning from a hunt, his dual blades dripping with fresh blood as they struck the ground heavily.
Ji Lingbai had been surrounded by a menacing aura, his clothes splattered with pieces of flesh, making her too intimidated to look at him.
At that time, she didn’t know his exact position; she only saw the Master of the First Fortress cautiously smiling beside him.
“He looks much gentler than two years ago,” Zhang Fen remarked reflexively.
Grandma Hua immediately scoffed softly.
“What are you talking about?” Grandma Hua frowned. “That’s selective gentleness; he treats people differently. He didn’t hesitate to blow up our supply truck!” The thought still caused her pain.
“San Wu is someone Ji Lingbai wants to promote.”
San Wu hadn’t heard Grandma Hua’s discussion.
After walking a distance, Ji Lingbai suddenly said, “I wasn’t joking just now.”
San Wu turned around, seeing that he was still fixated on the previous topic. She decisively pulled him closer and whispered, “What do you think I am? Just anyone can stand out there and have people smile and step aside for me?”
She had always been cautious while in the fortress.
She wondered what Zhang Fen’s temper was like and how to deal with her.
Ji Lingbai stopped and turned to look at her seriously. “You may not be me, but everyone knows how good your relationship is with me around here.”
“With the combat strength of your village and my support,” he continued, “as long as you’re not charging into the Second Fortress to take Xia Zhiqing’s life, there’s nowhere you can’t go in this area.”
The larger moon post-apocalypse had risen high, surrounded by stars, but thick, heavy clouds had begun to cover the horizon.
A heavy rain was on the way.
